Stanthorpe's CBD Streets will soon be full of music as the town plays host to the 2nd South East Queensland busking championships. First held in conjunction with the 2016 Apple & Grape Harvest Festival, that event was so popular that the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe has accepted the role of coordinating the event on the last Saturday of February each year.
Head of the busking committee, Rotarian Fran Hodgson has a strong administration committee consisting of Rotary, Apple & Grape and Rotary's Satellite Club members to promote the 1st championship round for 2017. "Saturday 25 February will be the date that all of Stanthorpe and Granite Belt should mark in their diaries and I ask that everybody spread the word through their networks and encourage people outside the region to take a trip to Stanthorpe for that weekend." For the 2016 championships an estimated 3,000 people attended. Stanthorpe was the first region outside the national busking capital of Cooma to be selected by the Australian National Busking Championship committee and such was the success that there will now be regional finals held in Ballarat Vic, Narooma NSW and Noosa Heads Qld with the national finals set for Cooma NSW in November 2017. |

Prizemoney totalling $6,000 will be on offer across six sections and anybody can enter. An example of who has become known through busking is the very popular String Family, a 4-piece family string group who has appeared in Stanthorpe on many occasions. "The String Family were the 2015 national champions and this title encouraged to take their music across Australia they are an example of how busking can help musicians on the road to greater success," said Fran Hodgson.
The date for the South East Queensland Championships in Stanthorpe is 25 February 2017 and nominations must be lodged by 23 February.
